Environment

1.NHAI to plant 20,000 saplings in two days. 

Madras High Court has ordered National Highway authority of India (NHAI) to plant 20,000 saplings near a four lane highway failing which it may lose the right to collect toll from these areas.
Few Facts: NHAI claims that it plant 3 sapling for very tree felled but often very little of them survive the vagaries of nature.

Internet

1. Facebook strongly defends Free Basic

Mark Zuckerberg the  founder of Facebook said that companies Free basic programme does not violate the principle of net neutrality in contrary  it will help to bridge digital divide. He further claimed that most of the people who advocates for net neutrality already has access to net but those who yet not has net access have no way to push for thier demand for access to net . He said Facebook  Free Basic programme does not violates principle of net neutrality wherein a company charges different rates for services or telecom provider try to give advantage to its own services over others  instead Free Basic is an open platform where any developer who can build low bandwidth service can be zero rated and have his service on the platform. Therefore the platform is neutral as it allow unhindered access . It is open  to anyone without any Facebook filter. Facebook has re branded Internet.org has Free Basic following the complaints of favouritism toward Facebook services.

Domestic

1. Telangana to cut schemes 

Telangana government has decided to cut various schemes that are not saving and delivering money. Most of the schemes  are State government funded without having any legislative backing. Even those with legislative backing the budgetary allocation has not been made for many years. This is an attempt of government to reduce wasteful expenditure as much as possible so that it meet the challenging task of providing Rs. 25,000 crore for irrigation project over next three years. 


2. Kerela: 76 percent of fund not utilised

In Kerela fund utilization rate is just 24 percent. Majority of fund apportioned for major development projects remains Unutilised . At this rate it is unlikely that Kerela will meet 60 percent fund utilization target it has set  for  December. 


3.Great Indian Award Returning ceremony continued. 

Many film-makers   including  Dibaker Banarjee has returned their awards to protest against growing intolerance, communal hated and polarisation in the country. Many scientist also returned award citing  eroding of scientific thinking and reasoning values in the country.

Piracy

1. ISPs asked to block film piracy sites

Telangana government has asked internet service providers to block around 1000 websites resorting to piracy of Telugu films. Reportedly Telgu film industry lost Rs 350 crore on account of  piracy in last six month. A recent survey showed that pirated film industry worth more then Indian film industry.


5. CIC don't withhold information in name of national security

Central Information Commission told DRDO and BARC that they cannot withhold information in guise of national security.These organisations withhold even basic information like environment clearances , plans to protect water bodies and place s to build pathways for villagers. With the availability of information on environmental clearances people will be able to tame these agencies as environment clearance require that Environment Impact report be prepared in consultation with gram shabha.

Economy

1.Power reform responsible for increased Ease of Business Ranking

Reforms like elimination of internal wiring inspection , combing of various procedure into one , single inspection rather than many are responsible for improved Business Ranking of India . Electric connections has became more reliable. India has raced ahead of China in getting electricity with an rank of 70th while China's rank is 90th. Central reform like abolition of minimum requirement of Rs 1 lakh to be deposit for opening a local limited  company under  Companies Act  has contributed to improved ranking. 
All this has reversed the slide of many years.

International

1. Nepal gets its first women President

Bidhya Bhandari become first President of Nepal after adoption of new constitution.
In related incident Nepal after facing acute shortage of essential commodities due to protest by Madhesis against adoption of new constitution has signed first fuel agreement with China to supply petroleum ending years of monopoly of India.

Science

1.National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau(NNMP) Closed

Government has shut down NNMP which collects data on dietary intake of households. Since in India nutrition has cultural significance data on what people are eating help in culturally  accepted policy interventions to fight under nutrition and malnutrition . This decision should be seen in context that India has largest number of children with malnutrition.
There are many research organisations that are hit by cash crunch. CSIR has been asked to start "self-financing " projects to turn research into a "for-profit" venture as government is cutting on research funding.
